"Razor-Beaks!" Damien yelled, raising his rifle. "They’re going for the balloon! If they pop the bag, we drop!"

The flock dived, a chaotic cloud of feathers and claws. One of the Shrikes slammed into Damien’s shoulder, its beak raking across his ceramic plating with a screech of metal on metal. He backhanded the creature, sending the bird spinning away with a broken wing.

"I can't use the cannon, the recoil will spin us!" Parker shouted, firing his pistol with methodical precision into the mass of birds.

"Just keep them off the bag!" Damien ordered, switching his rifle to burst fire.

He tracked the lead bird, leading the target as the creature spiraled toward the orange polymer of the lift bag. He squeezed the trigger, and a three-round burst of plasma turned the creature into a puff of feathers and ash.

The swarm swirled around them, pecking at their visors and tearing at their gear. It was a frantic, disorienting battle fought while suspended two thousand feet in the air. Damien kicked out, smashing a bird that tried to land on his boot, while Parker emptied a magazine into the thickest part of the flock.

"They aren't giving up!" Parker yelled, reloading his weapon with practiced speed.

"They want the chemical residue on the bag!" Damien realized, remembering the smell of the reactant. "I bet it smells like nectar to them!"

He reached for a flare on his belt, igniting the magnesium stick. The bright red fire sputtered to life, hissing in the wind and casting a harsh light. He waved the flare wildly, creating a barrier of smoke and heat around the balloon.

The Razor-Beaks shrieked in protest, blinded by the sudden light and choked by the smoke. They broke formation, scattering into the clouds to escape the noxious fumes of the flare.

"Clear!" Damien shouted, watching them retreat into the mist. "Ascent path is green!"

They broke through the final layer of clouds a moment later, leaving the birds and the jungle behind. The silence of the upper atmosphere returned, broken only by the heavy breathing of two men who had cheated death yet again.

The return to the orbital station usually involved a period of decompression, a few hours to shower, eat, and let the adrenaline fade into exhaustion. But Director Sterling apparently tracked their biometrics in real-time, because a security team intercepted them the moment the airlock cycled.

"Director Sterling requires your immediate presence," the lead guard stated, blocking their path to the barracks with a stern expression. "Do not stop to change. Do not stop to clean up."

"We smell like monster guts and bird feathers," Parker protested, gesturing to his ruined armor. "We aren't exactly boardroom ready."

"The Director was specific," the guard replied, unmoving and unamused.
